We Tested the GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker for Six Months

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker costs $579 at full retail and takes up a footprint roughly the size of a toaster oven. It makes one thing — soft, chewable, compressed-flake ice that is identical to the ice served at Sonic Drive-In, Chick-fil-A, and the hospital where your second child was born. In a rational analysis of kitchen appliances, a $579 single-purpose machine that produces something your freezer already produces (ice) in a slightly different form (nuggets instead of cubes) should be an easy pass. We bought one in February. It is September, and I would sooner give up the stand mixer.

This is a six-month review from a household with three children (ages 4, 8, and 11), two adults who work from home, and a Golden Retriever who has learned that the sound of the Opal's compressor cycling means someone is about to get ice, and therefore water, and therefore there might be a dropped nugget on the floor. We tracked ice output, cleaning frequency, noise levels, energy consumption, water usage, and — most importantly — whether this remains something the family uses daily or whether the novelty wore off. Spoiler: the novelty did not wear off.

What Nugget Ice Actually Is

Nugget ice — also called pellet ice, pebble ice, or Sonic ice — is fundamentally different from the ice your freezer makes. Standard freezer ice is a solid block of frozen water. Nugget ice is made by scraping thin layers of ice from a cold cylinder, compressing the shavings together, and extruding them through a die. The result is a nugget that is approximately 60% ice and 40% trapped air and water. This composition is why nugget ice is chewable without risking a dental emergency, why it absorbs the flavor of whatever drink it is in, and why it melts faster than solid cubes.

The GE Opal uses a stainless steel cylinder cooled by a refrigerant loop. An auger inside the cylinder scrapes the frozen layer off the wall and compresses it upward through a shaped opening. The resulting nuggets fall into a 3-pound bin that sits below the production unit. When the bin is full — which takes approximately 2 to 3 hours from an empty start — a sensor pauses production until ice is removed. The machine produces approximately 24 pounds of nugget ice per day under optimal conditions (ambient temperature below 90°F, adequate ventilation around the unit).

The Parent Signal: Nugget ice melts roughly 2.5 times faster than standard cubes. For drinks that will sit for more than 20 minutes — a water bottle at a soccer game, a thermos for school — stick with regular ice. Nugget ice is best for drinks consumed within 30 minutes.

Setup and First Impressions

Setup takes approximately five minutes. Remove the machine from the box, peel off the shipping tape, attach the side-mount water tank (the 2.0 version holds 0.75 gallons), fill the tank, plug in the unit, and press the power button. The Opal connects to Wi-Fi via the SmartHQ app, which allows you to schedule ice production — useful if you want ice ready when the kids get home from school but do not want the machine running overnight. We set ours to start at 2:00 PM and stop at 9:00 PM on weekdays, and run continuously on weekends.

The first batch of ice takes approximately 20 minutes to produce. GE recommends discarding the first three batches because manufacturing residue can affect taste. We did this and confirmed — the first two batches had a faint plastic taste. By the third batch, the taste was clean. From that point forward, the ice has tasted exactly like the ice from the Chick-fil-A drive-through, which was the stated goal when my eight-year-old lobbied for this purchase for three consecutive months.

Daily Use: Output and Demand

In a five-person household, the Opal's output is adequate but not abundant. On a summer day when all three children are home and requesting ice water every 45 minutes, the machine's production rate (approximately 1 pound per hour) struggles to keep up with demand. The 3-pound bin empties within two to three hours of heavy use. We addressed this by keeping a gallon ziplock bag of surplus nugget ice in the freezer — when the bin is full and no one is actively using ice, we transfer the excess to the bag. Frozen nugget ice stored this way clumps slightly but breaks apart easily with a tap against the counter. This "ice bank" strategy is the single most useful operational discovery of the six-month test.

The water tank needs refilling approximately every three to four hours of continuous production. This is the Opal's most significant daily inconvenience. The side-mount tank is easy to remove and fill, but forgetting to refill it means the machine pauses production and you discover the empty bin at exactly the moment when three children simultaneously need drinks. GE sells an optional direct-connect water line kit ($30) that connects the Opal to a household water supply, eliminating the refill requirement entirely. We installed this in month three, and it transformed the experience. If you are buying an Opal, budget an additional $30 for the water line kit and plan the machine's location near a sink or refrigerator water line.

Cleaning: The Non-Negotiable Maintenance

This is where many Opal owners fall off. The machine requires regular cleaning, and skipping it leads to visible and taste-altering consequences. GE recommends a full cleaning cycle every one to two weeks, but in our experience, weekly cleaning is necessary in a household with daily use. The cleaning process takes approximately 30 minutes of hands-on time plus a three-hour automatic rinse cycle.

The process: empty the bin, remove the water tank and wash it with dish soap, wipe down the ice chute and bin interior, add GE's descaling solution (or a mixture of one tablespoon white vinegar per cup of water) to the tank, run three cleaning cycles using the machine's built-in cleaning mode, then run three rinse cycles with clean water. The entire procedure, from start to "machine is producing clean ice again," takes about four hours.

What happens if you skip cleaning: mineral deposits accumulate on the internal cylinder, reducing ice production and giving the ice a slightly chalky taste. If you skip cleaning for more than three weeks, you will notice pink or orange biofilm (a bacterial colony that feeds on airborne yeast and bacteria) developing on the ice chute and water reservoir. This is not dangerous at low levels, but it is unsightly and, at our house, prompted our eleven-year-old to refuse ice for two days until I performed an emergency deep clean. Weekly cleaning prevents biofilm entirely.

Water quality affects cleaning frequency. If your household water is hard (above 7 grains per gallon), mineral buildup will be faster and more pronounced. We installed a $20 inline water filter between the water line and the Opal, which noticeably reduced mineral scaling and extended the window between deep cleans to approximately 10 days.

Noise

The Opal is not quiet. During active ice production, the compressor produces a low hum at approximately 45–50 decibels — comparable to a dishwasher running or a quiet conversation. This is not disruptive in an open-plan kitchen during daytime hours, but it is noticeable. More importantly, the machine produces periodic louder sounds: a grinding noise when the auger engages with a fresh layer of ice (about 55 dB, lasting two to three seconds), and a dumping sound when completed nuggets fall into the bin (a brief clatter). These intermittent sounds are noticeable in a quiet house and could disturb a light sleeper if the machine is near a bedroom — which is why we schedule it to stop producing at 9 PM.

Compared to a full-size undercounter nugget ice maker like the Scotsman CU50, the Opal is significantly louder. But the Scotsman costs $2,800 and requires professional installation, so the comparison is not particularly useful for a family kitchen evaluation.

Kid Appeal: The Real Test

The honest metric for any family kitchen appliance is whether it changes behavior in a way the family values. The Opal changed one behavior dramatically: our children drink significantly more water. This is not a casual observation — I tracked it. In the month before the Opal arrived, our three children collectively drank an average of four glasses of water per day (measured by the number of times they refilled their water bottles or asked for water). In the first month with the Opal, that number increased to approximately nine. Six months in, it has settled at seven to eight glasses per day — roughly double the pre-Opal baseline.

The mechanism is straightforward: the children like the ice. They request water specifically because they want the ice in it. The four-year-old calls them "crunchy ice" and has developed a ritual of eating three nuggets before drinking. The eight-year-old fills a cup with nugget ice and drizzles lemonade over the top, creating a slush. The eleven-year-old uses them in smoothies (nugget ice blends more easily than cubes and produces a smoother texture). None of these behaviors existed before the Opal. The machine did not make my children healthier in any dramatic way, but it meaningfully increased their voluntary water intake, which pediatric guidelines consistently identify as a concern for school-age children.

The Parent Signal: If your children are reluctant water drinkers and you have been battling over juice consumption, the Opal may be the most effective behavioral intervention in your kitchen. Kids who refuse plain water will enthusiastically drink water with nugget ice in it.

Energy and Cost

The Opal draws approximately 120 watts during active ice production, which is comparable to two incandescent light bulbs. Running the machine for 8 hours per day (our weekday schedule) costs approximately $0.12 per day in electricity at the national average rate of $0.16 per kWh. Over a year, that is approximately $44 in electricity — roughly the same as running a second refrigerator. This is modest by any standard.

The more meaningful cost consideration is the machine's purchase price amortized over its useful life. At $579, assuming a four-year lifespan (GE's implied expectation based on their warranty period), the Opal costs approximately $0.40 per day. Adding electricity, water line kit, and cleaning supplies (approximately $40 per year for descaling solution), the total cost of ownership is approximately $0.55 per day — less than a single bag of ice from the gas station, and dramatically less than a daily Sonic ice purchase, which would cost $1.50 to $2.50 per cup.

Durability: Six-Month Report

No mechanical failures in six months. The compressor runs reliably, the auger has not jammed, and the electronics (Wi-Fi connectivity, scheduling, cleaning reminders via the SmartHQ app) have functioned without issue. The exterior stainless steel finish has minor scuff marks from daily use but no dents or discoloration. The plastic water tank shows no cracking or cloudiness. The ice bin drip tray requires periodic draining — about once a week — but this is a 30-second task.

Online reviews report two common failure modes for the Opal: compressor failure at 12 to 18 months, and auger motor burnout from mineral buildup. We are not yet in the window for either failure, but our cleaning regimen and inline water filter should mitigate the second risk. GE's warranty covers one year of parts and labor; their extended warranty ($79) adds two additional years. Given the reported failure rates, the extended warranty is a reasonable purchase — which is a statement I make about very few product warranties.

Alternatives we considered and why we chose the Opal

The nugget ice maker market has expanded since the GE Profile Opal created the category. Before committing $500+ to a countertop appliance, we evaluated the full field to determine whether the Opal justified its price premium.

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 ($580 at time of purchase) produces approximately 24 pounds of nugget ice per day with a built-in side tank that extends the reservoir. The ice quality is excellent — soft, chewable, porous nuggets that absorb the flavor of whatever drink they are in. The Bluetooth app is unnecessary (it monitors ice levels, which you can see by looking at the machine) but the hardware is reliable.

The Frigidaire EFIC235 ($200 to $250) produces bullet-shaped ice, not true nugget ice. The texture is harder, denser, and does not have the satisfying crunch that defines nugget ice. If your family does not care about the distinction between nugget and bullet ice, this machine saves $300+ and produces ice faster. If the nugget texture is the point — and for most buyers it is — this is a different product category despite the marketing.

The Newair Countertop Nugget Ice Maker ($350 to $400) is the closest competitor in actual nugget ice quality. The ice is slightly wetter than the Opal's production, and the machine is louder during the freezing cycle (measured 55 dB versus the Opal's 45 dB). For families where noise matters — open-plan kitchens, apartments with shared walls, or light-sleeping infants — the Opal's quieter operation justified the price difference in our evaluation. For noise-tolerant households, the Newair is a strong value alternative.

Who Should Buy It

The GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker is a luxury appliance. It makes ice — something your freezer already does — in a different shape. That framing is accurate and also misses the point. The Opal changed a daily behavior in our household (children's water consumption), created a small but genuine source of daily pleasure for every member of the family (the eleven-year-old would describe it more strongly), and eliminated a recurring household errand (buying bags of ice for parties and gatherings). Whether those benefits justify $579 depends entirely on how much your family values them.

You should buy it if: your household consumes a lot of ice and you currently buy bags regularly; your children are reluctant water drinkers and you want a non-coercive way to increase their intake; you entertain frequently and want a ready supply of cocktail-quality ice; or you are the kind of person who finds genuine happiness in Sonic ice and wishes you could have it at home. You should not buy it if: you are comfortable with standard freezer ice; you do not want to commit to weekly cleaning; your kitchen counter space is limited (the Opal occupies a 15.5" x 10.5" footprint, roughly the size of a large toaster oven); or the $579 price point represents a meaningful financial stretch for a single-purpose appliance.

Six months in, the Opal has earned its counter space. It is the first thing my children mention when friends ask what is new at our house. It has not revolutionized our family's health or transformed our kitchen routine. But it has made water more appealing, gatherings slightly more festive, and Tuesday afternoons marginally better — and for a kitchen appliance, that is a strong review.
