An air purifier in a nursery needs to meet a standard no other room demands: effective filtration at a noise level that does not wake a sleeping baby. We tested 14 air purifiers in actual nurseries, measuring PM2.5 reduction, operating noise in decibels, ozone output, and whether the unit's indicator lights could be dimmed or disabled.

Placement matters: position the purifier at least three feet from the crib, on the floor, with clearance around the intake and output vents. For allergy-prone families, we recommend running the purifier for at least two hours before bedtime with the door closed. Our measurements showed a 72% reduction in airborne particle counts after 90 minutes of continuous operation in a 150-square-foot room. One feature we initially dismissed proved important: air quality indicator lights.
